THE FIRST MONDAY IN MAY

The ultimate night on the town, the 2026 Met Gala marked the opening of the Costume Institute’s spring 2026 exhibition, “Costume Art,” and the inauguration of the department’s new permanent home within the Condé M. Nast Galleries. The evening’s dress code, “Fashion Is Art,” saw Michael draw inspiration from the incredible Greek ceramics, statues and classical bodies found in the museum. Michael arrived in style with his date for the evening—Academy Award-winning actress Anne Hathaway—in addition to crafting custom looks for actress Gabrielle Union and athlete Dwyane Wade, brand ambassadors Suki Waterhouse and Danny Ramirez, legendary ballerina and member of this year’s Met Gala host committee Misty Copeland and models Liu Wen and Devyn Garcia. Hand-painting, artful draping, crystal embellishments and an emphasis on the naked body tied the looks together as Michael and guests toasted the occasion in dazzling fashion.

ANNE HATHAWAY

Michael’s date for “fashion’s biggest night,” Anne Hathaway, wore a custom Michael Kors Collection black silk-and-wool mikado strapless gown with a cascade skirt, featuring one-of-a-kind hand-painted motifs by artist Peter McGough. Inspired by John Keats’ poem “Ode on a Grecian Urn,” the dress took over 60 hours to hand paint, featuring black and white scenes reminiscent of ancient urns within the Met’s collections.

SUKI WATERHOUSE

Suki Waterhouse, a MICHAEL KORS brand ambassador, wore a custom Michael Kors Collection guava jersey goddess skirt paired with a plunge halter bodysuit featuring two 9-foot sash trains, inspired by the drapery seen on so many classical Greek sculptures at the Met.

DANNY RAMIREZ

Danny Ramirez, a MICHAEL KORS brand ambassador, wore a custom Michael Kors Collection suntan crepe double-breasted tuxedo that put an emphasis on the idea of skin tones but with sleek tailoring rather than the bare body.

GABRIELLE UNION AND DWYANE WADE

Gabrielle Union wore a custom Michael Kors Collection cocoa cutout gown. Requiring 480 hours to embroider, the gown features over 107,000 crystals, in two different sizes, individually placed atop a layer of delicate tulle.

Joining Gabrielle, Dwyane Wade wore a custom Michael Kors Collection black frayed wool gabardine double-breasted sleeveless tuxedo that blended sharp tailoring with the athletic body.

MISTY COPELAND

A member of the Met Gala host committee, ballerina Misty Copeland wore a custom Michael Kors Collection cocoa plongé leather bandeau top paired with a tulle skirt and leather belt, inspired by Degas dancers.

DEVYN GARCIA

Model Devyn Garcia wore a custom Michael Kors Collection black-and-suntan tromp l’oeil viscose jacquard knit column gown with crystal embroidery that “allows one to leave the house naked yet fully dressed,” remarked Michael Kors. The gown was custom-engineered to her measurements and natural contours using a state-of-the-art Stoll knitting machine, and finished with thousands of individually placed crystals in three different sizes.

LIU WEN

Supermodel Liu Wen wore a custom Michael Kors Collection white crepe jersey draped gown with a matching ruched bra and wrist-train swags, a nod to Erté and his famous art deco illustrations.
