Met Gala 2021
The Met Gala returned on September 13th with a theme that has fascinated Michael Kors for all of his 40 years in business: American fashion. With a scaled-down yet no less star-studded guest list, the gala opened the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s first of a two-part exhibition, titled In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. Along with his date for the evening—the Academy Award-winning actor/director Regina King—Michael dressed power couple Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes, longtime friend Kate Hudson, Broadway star Ariana DeBose and models Adut Akech and Vittoria Ceretti. Featuring flourishes like sequins, crystals and ostrich feathers, each striking look exemplifies Michael’s approach to American fashion: a mix of opulence and ease.
From the 80,000 recycled sequins to the floor-length ostrich coat, it took almost 4,000 hours to hand-embroider Kate Hudson’s petal-pink look.
Regina King wore a double crepe sablé strapless gown and matching evening coat. The gold pinstripe embroidery glitters with nearly 110,000 crystals and took our artisans nearly 500 hours to create.
Approximately 106,572 sequins sparkled from Camila Cabello’s vibrant violet dress. A coordinating feather coat completed the ultra-glam look.
For Shawn Mendes’ look, Michael turned to his archives for a pair of black crushed-velvet trousers from his Fall/Winter 2004 collection. Pairing old with new, he topped them with a plongé leather blazer from the Spring/Summer 2022 collection that debuted on the runway last week.
